Umbilical cord derived stem cells offer several advantages over the other sources of stem cells. These cells have a robust potential to divide with unrestricted potency to form into a variety of cells.
The umbilical cord, the organ once considered a bio-medical waste is a rich source of stem cells, both hematopoietic (blood forming) and mesenchymal (non blood forming). Hematopoetic stem cells are derived from the umbilical cord blood whereas mesenchymal stem cells are derived from the umbilical cord tissue. These are potent cells and have a long-term proliferative capacity compared to other adult stem cells.
